The Kendall County Forest Preserve District is eyeing some big improvements to Subat Forest Preserve, located on Eldamain Road. On Tuesday, the board of commissioners approved a master plan that includes the construction of a new nature center and some additional trails.

As part of the plan, the district is applying for a $600,000 state grant and plans to use about $800,000 from its endowment fund. Director David Gurtiz says the nature center serves multiple uses.

Another upgrade is an eventual connection across the Fox River.

Gurtiz says there are a few other new trails to be built and maintained within the forest preserve as well.

Guritz says when construction starts to happen depends on when the district finds out if it is a grant recipient. If the district gets the grant, Guritz says planning and engineering could start next year.
