The Illinois Secretary of State's Office is reminding everyone that the expiration extension for driver's licenses and ID cards, that has been effect for over two years now, is ending on December 1.

The extension was put into place in 2020 to prevent people from crowding driver services facilities during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Spokesman Henry Haupt says that more people are renewing their licenses, and license plate registration, online now.

People who are eligible for online renewal should receive a letter in the mail with a unique PIN to use. Motorists can also call the secretary of state's office to see if they are eligible and retrieve their PIN if they can't find the letter. The number to call is 217-785-1424.

Driver services locations in Plano, Aurora, and Elgin are appointment only facilities. People can make an appointment online at ilsos.gov. The number to call to make an appointment is 844-817-4649.

Lots of other secretary of state-related business can also be done on the web site.

The secretary of state's office is also reminding people that the deadline for the Federal Real ID, which will be needed to fly, is May 3 next year.
