The Morris Community YMCA could be receiving over $3 million from the federal government. 16th District Republican Congressman Darin LaHood spoke with WCSJ about a trip he made to the Morris YMCA on Thursday.
LaHood gave a timeline for the grant application process.
Missey Durkin with the YMCA said they were honored to visit with Congressman LaHood on Thursday to share what the Y is currently doing to serve the community, as well as their exciting plans for the future. Durkin said they have submitted their application for fiscal year 2024 Community Project Funding. She said they are grateful for the invitation to apply and be considered for this opportunity.
The Morris YMCA has been raising funds over the past several years to construct the estimated $18 million facility, which will be called the Morris Hospital YMCA. The Y announced plans in 2018 for the development of the new facility in partnership with Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers. The new building will consist of a kids youth activity center, two community rooms, a six-lane recreational lap pool, indoor walking track and other amenities.
The new building will be on DuPont Avenue adjacent to Morris Grade School. The Morris Development Review Committee approved plans for the facility at a meeting on January 12th. Guy Christenson with the Y said construction could begin in the next few months. Construction could be completed in the early part of 2025.
