John H. Sparks, a retired drycleaner, died on Monday, August 30, 2021 at the age of 75.

John is survived by his wife, Barbara (Borchelt) Sparks; his children, Dave (Julie) Sparks and Debbie (Jarrod) Amolsch; his grandchildren Sarah Sparks, Skylar Sparks, Jacob Amolsch, Madison Amolsch and Kaitlyn Amolsch; his step grandchildren, Braxton Yard and Baylie Yard; and step great-grandchild Everleigh Cole; one sister, Mary Sue (J. Robert) Sampson; sister-in-law Sue (James Lee) Silliman; brothers-in-law Bob (Darlene) Borchelt, Don (Dee) Borchelt, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Allma (Matthews) Sparks and a grandson, Derek Sparks.

John was born in Morris on September 2, 1945 to Herbert & Allma (Matthews) Sparks. He was raised and educated in Morris. Following high school he enlisted in the Navy and served three years aboard the U.S.S. Edson DD946. After he was honorably discharged in 1967, he attended and graduated from the National Institute of Drycleaning in Maryland. In 1969, he married the love of his life Barbara (Borchelt) where they were married for 52 years. He joined his father, as a partner, in the family business, Sparks’ Drive-In Cleaners, which he owned and operated until his retirement in 2006.

John served as Treasurer on the board of the Illinois State Fabricare Association for four years and an Erienna Township Trustee for six years. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of Cedar Lodge, the Morris Shrine Club and the Morris Lions Club.

In 2010, John and his wife, moved to Darien, Illinois, where he was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church.

John was an avid reader and enjoyed traveling, especially going on cruises and going to Las Vegas.

A wake will be held on Wednesday, September 8th from 4:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. at Modell Funeral Home, 7710 S. Cass Ave., Darien.  Funeral services are scheduled for Thursday, September 9th at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made, in his memory, to Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Darien, IL and Shriners Hospital for Children.
