John A. Durkin Sr., 92, passed away peacefully Sunday, January 10, 2021 at his home in Morris surrounded by his family. Born November 2, 1928 in Chicago, IL, he was the son of the late Joseph M. and Mary (Galvin) Durkin.
John grew up and attended school in Chicago. After high school he served in the United States Army from 1950 to 1952. He married Patricia Durkin on June 9, 1951 and immediately focused on building a strong Catholic family. Following retirement, John enjoyed traveling with his wife to Arkansas, Myrtle Beach, SC and to Naples, FL. He worked for O’Connor & Goldberg Shoe Store in downtown Chicago prior to working for Commonwealth Edison for 41 years until his retirement. John also co-owned Irondale Pizzeria in Chicago for many years.
He enjoyed fishing with his family and friends and attending his grandchildren’s sporting events.
He is survived by his children Kevin (Patricia) of Orland Park, Michael (Shelley) of Orland Park, Kerry (Gwen) of Thorton, Brian (Clara) of San Antonio, TX, John Jr. (Deb) of Coal City, Sharon Durkin of Crest Hill, Patrick (Krista) of Channahon, Robert (Melissa) of Morris, Christopher (Liz Blaskey) of Morris and Lois (Scott) Darlington of Morris; grandchildren Nicholas (Sarah), Jennifer (Melissa), Sean (Nicole), Keith (Aubrey), Jeffrey, Maureen (Tony Falkner), Kelly (Brian) Berner, Jeremy (Katie), Bailey, Breckin, Christopher, Stephanie (Andrew) Struckmeyer, Jason (Kristin), Kevin, John, Katherine, Joshua (Erin) Blaskey, Brandon (Amber), Erin Blaskey, Hallie, Matthew and Lillian Darlington; 24 great grandchildren; brother-in-law Ray W. Spray and sister-in-law Joanne Durkin.
He is preceded in death by his wife Patricia on July 14, 2017; his parents; daughter Mary Elizabeth; brothers Don (Virginia), Gerald and Robert; and his sister Jean Spray.
Memorials may be made in John’s name to Grundy Community Lending Closet, Immaculate Conception School or Joliet Area Community Hospice.
Visitation will be held 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm Friday January 15, 2021 at the U. C. Davis-Callahan Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 am Saturday January 16th at Immaculate Conception Church in Morris, presiding by Father Jason Stone. Burial will be in Holy Sepulchre Catholic Cemetery in Alsip, Illinois with Father Ed Howe presiding.
