The Will County Sheriff's Office responded to a break in at a home on W. South Arsenal Road in Wilmington last Saturday at around three in the morning. When deputies arrived they found a man standing in the driveway who was arrested. A search of the home found nothing missing or damaged.
The 66-year-old man told deputies that his car had become stuck in deep snow nearby and he did not have a working cell phone. He left his vehicle to try to find help after several hours of trying to get his car free or flag down a passing motorist. Temperatures were below freezing.
The man reached the home and tried to alert the homeowner, who wasn't home. He eventually broke in and turned up the heat and planned on writing a letter to the homeowner explaining the situation. That was when the brother of the homeowner, who lives nearby, had called police.
A deputy explained the situation to the homeowner who declined to file a report with police about the incident. The 66-year-old man said that he would pay for the damage he caused breaking in. His vehicle was found nearby stuck in the snow.
