Starved Rock State Park officials are reminding people about winter safety tips while visiting the park. They said be on the lookout for animal tracks in fresh snow and keep an eye out for Bald Eagles.

Along the river can be very windy and the interior canyon trails are always much cooler than the outside air so they suggest bringing an extra layer of clothing. Park officials also suggest using walking sticks or trekking poles, which are especially helpful on icy surfaces.

None of the trails are groomed during the winter and hard packed snow is very slippery, especially on the wooden staircases and board walks. Good boots and external traction devices for your boots, such as Yaktrax, STABILicers, or micro spikes are highly recommended.
