Traffic at the intersection of Route 47 and George Street was backed up on Friday and will continue to be until Monday. That’s according to the Morris Police Department as they responded to a single vehicle accident that occurred at the intersection around 5 a.m. on Friday, July 31.
Police officials say a 66-year-old Morris man was heading to a local business to get a coffee when he passed out and struck a fire hydrant as well as the traffic pole at the southwest corner of the intersection.
The fire hydrant was knocked out of the ground and the damage to the traffic pole caused the traffic lights to turn off. The Morris Public Works Department responded to take care of the fire hydrant while IDOT was notified about the damaged traffic pole.
The Morris Police Department said the lights at the intersection will be blinking until Monday when the parts to fix the issue will arrive. The man was not injured and no tickets were issued.
