More details have been released regarding a serious accident that occurred on Interstate 80 west of the Ridge Road exit shortly before 9 p.m. on February 21st.

The Illinois State Police said a tow truck hauling a vehicle in the left lane was struck by a vehicle driven by a male. The male driver, who was standing outside of his vehicle after that incident, was then struck by another vehicle. The accident caused a chain reaction involving several other vehicles.

The Illinois State Police told WCSJ that eight people were transported to area hospitals with non-life threatening injuries. The male driver, who was struck while standing outside of his vehicle, was airlifted to an area hospital with serious injuries. Both lanes of Interstate 80 were closed for more than four hours so the Illinois State Police could reconstruct the accident.

Ambulances from Minooka, Channahon, Morris, Oswego, Joliet, East Joliet, Rockdale, Braidwood and other fire agencies were called to the accident, which remains under investigation. The Illinois State Police did not say if anyone was arrested or given a citation.
