Grundy County’s newly appointed Associate Judge was sworn in at the Grundy County Courthouse this morning. Scott Belt was appointed to the 13th Judicial Circuit Associate Judge position on December 18th.
The appointment was made by the eleven Circuit Judges in the 13th Judicial Circuit.
Belt also had this to say.
Belt was licensed to practice law in the State of Illinois in 1990 and licensed in the State of Florida in 2016. Belt is also licensed to practice before the U.S Federal District Court, Northern District of Illinois. Prior to being appointed Associate Judge, Belt was in private practice in Grundy County for over 30 years.
He has served as Morris City Attorney since 2001, and has represented numerous other municipalities, townships, special districts and units of local government, including the Grundy County 911 Board. He has also handled significant injury and wrongful death cases, probate matters, civil litigation and criminal defense.
During his tenure as Associate Judge, Belt is expected to preside over misdemeanor jury cases, family matters, evictions and other civil matters, as well as traffic and felony cases.
Belt succeeds now Circuit Judge Sheldon Sobol, who previously held the Associate Judge position. Sobol was elected to Circuit Judge last November after former Judge Rob Marsaglia retired in December. Grundy County has Lance Peterson and Sobol as Circuit Judges and Belt as Associate Judge.
