Republican State Rep. Keith Wheeler of Oswego has filed new legislation that would allow expectant mothers in their third trimester to obtain a free placard for their vehicle permitting them to park in handicap designated spots throughout Illinois.
According to a press release, women with a valid Illinois driver’s license who show adequate documentation that they have entered the third trimester of their pregnancy would be able to receive a parking placard at no charge, similar to those provided to disabled persons, if the bill is signed into law
The placard would be valid for 90 days; they can be obtained by visiting any of the more than 100 Driver Services facilities across Illinois operated by the Secretary of State.
Wheeler says "nurturing a new life, particularly during the third trimester, can make it more difficult to get around. This initiative is a common-sense idea that everyone can rally behind to make Illinois more friendly for expectant moms.”
House Bill 4778 awaits assignment to a committee for a hearing after the House of Representatives returns to Springfield on February 18 to resume the spring legislative session.
