One person was killed and several others were injured in a crash that occurred on Interstate 55 northbound lanes near Wilmington around 9:30 Thursday morning.

The Illinois State Police said a semi driven by Shabbir Patel, 46, of Brampton, Ontario failed to yield to traffic that was stopped for construction, which then caused a chain reaction crash with four other vehicles.

Patel was taken to an area hospital. Jessica Kirkland, 20, of Godley, who was the second vehicle in the chain reaction, was airlifted from the scene to an area hospital.

The driver of unit three, Kenneth Bloor, 34, of St. Peters, Missouri was pronounced deceased at the hospital. The driver of the two other semi trucks were Chris Neale, 54, of Lenoke, Arkansas and Georgi Nikov, 50, of Rolling Meadows, Illinois.

Patel was charged with Following Too Closely & Failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. The Wilmington, Channahon, and Braidwood Fire Department assisted at the scene.

The Illinois State Police is still investigating the crash.
