One person was killed in a train vs. vehicle crash that occurred in rural Dwight around 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, January 21st.

Dwight Fire Chief Paul Johnson said it appeared as if the vehicle crossed the tracks and was hit by the train at the cross streets railroad crossing at East 3200 North Road and East 3300 North Road.

Johnson said the vehicle was rolled over in the ditch fully engulfed in flames upon arrival and quickly extinguished. Upon extinguishment of the fire, one male was found deceased in the driver’s seat.

The name of the individual has not been released and the train engineer was not injured. Fire officials say the railroad crossing appeared to be in working order.

The Dwight Police Department, Livingston County Sheriff’s Office, Grundy County Sheriff’s Office, Livingston County Coroner’s office, Norfolk Southern Railway, Gardner Fire Protection District and Reddick Fire Department responded to the accident, which remains under investigation.
