Two people were arrested for DUI after a fatal crash that occurred in the southbound lanes of Interstate 55 near Plainfield around 6 a.m. on January 19th.
The Illinois State Police said Rodrigo Marin, 42, of Plainfield was traveling on Interstate 55 when he allegedly lost control of his vehicle and struck the front left side of a box truck.
After the incident, both vehicles came to a stop and Marin left the scene of the crash, but was later located on foot. A few minutes later, the Illinois State Police said Erin Zilka, 35, of Plainfield allegedly struck the rear of the box truck, which was involved in the first crash.
Zilka was transported to a local hospital with non life threatening injuries. Charles Schauer, 33, of Glen Ellyn, a passenger in Zilka’s vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. No injuries were reported from the first accident.
However, Marin was arrested for Aggravated DUI, DUI, DUI over 0.08, Leaving the Scene of an Accident, No Valid Insurance, Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid a Crash, Improper Use of a Designated Lane and Failure to Give Information and Render Aid.
Zilka was also arrested for DUI due to her alleged role in the second crash. Zilka, a 12-year veteran with the Joliet Police Department was off-duty at the time of second accident. Schauer, a 10-year member with the Berwyn Police Department was also off-duty at the time of the crash.
Both crashes remain under investigation by the Illinois State Police.
