That was the crowd reaction after the Dwight Village Board last night approved three annexation items allowing for a new immigration center to be built in Dwight.

Around 200 people attended and more than 25 citizens spoke during the two hour meeting. This comes after the Dwight Planning Commission had a four hour meeting with several speakers last month.

Dwight Mayor Jared Anderson said Immigration Centers of America wants to build an immigration detention center on an 88 acre site near Interstate 55 and Route 17 that will house 1,200 individuals awaiting immigration hearings.

Anderson explained how the facility would work.

He said the $20 million facility would be a huge benefit to the community.

Besides the job aspect, Anderson outlined another positive from the project.

Anderson said they are paying the first $500,000 for the lift station project.

Dwight resident and business owner Max Sulzberger spoke during the public portion of the meeting.

An individual with a group of protesters shared his dismay about the possible facility.

Although the annexation agreement was approved, Anderson said the facility might never be constructed.

He said the agreement with ICA ends on September 28th of 2020 and a request for proposal needs to be done by the Department of Human Services, which might not have happen until August.
