The Morris Police Department has released more information regarding the fatal crash that occurred on Route 47 over the Illinois River Bridge around 4 p.m. on Sunday, August 18th.

Police officials say preliminary investigation reveals a vehicle with four occupants inside broke down in the southbound lanes of Route 47. That’s when a vehicle driven by 50-year-old Ronald Prohaska pulled in front of the broken down vehicle to assist.

A vehicle driven by Matthew Taylor, 53, of Morris then rear-ended the broken down vehicle, which also struck Prohaska and his vehicle. Police officials say the fuel tank in the broken down vehicle came out and burst into flames. The broken down vehicle ended up in the northbound lanes of Route 47.

Prohaska was airlifted to Good Samaritan Hospital and later died from his injuries. At least two others suffered injuries including a small child, whose has been released from the hospital. Prohaska, who was a Cook County Sheriff’s Officer, was working off-duty at the time of the incident.

Meanwhile, Taylor was cited for failing to reduce speed to avoid an accident and other tickets are pending. The crash remains under investigation by the Morris Police Department.
