The Morris High School Board last night approved a plan to retire the Redskin mascot by August of 2025.
Over the past two years, several members from the public spoke about keeping the mascot, while some said the board needs to change the name.
Superintendent Craig Ortiz said having a transition plan in place to retire the mascot is important.
Ortiz said the plan includes coming up with a new name by January of 2024.
Ortiz also had this to say.
The only member to vote no last night was Lynn Vermillion as she wanted to hold off on making a decision due to Covid.
Vermillion also had this to say at a meeting in late 2021.
Along with Morris, Sullivan, Momence, and Nokomis High School in Illinois have the redskin mascot.
