More details have been released regarding a man that left the scene of an accident in rural Dwight. The Dwight Fire Department said an accident occurred near the intersection of Verona Road and 3300 North Road around 2 a.m. on Saturday, February 19th.
When first responders arrived, Elijah Manuel, 35, of Joliet was not located and emergency crews began a ground search. Fire officials say weather conditions were below freezing and there was a very dense fog which made the search very difficult.
First responders located Manuel near the northwest corner outside of the closed Dwight Correctional Center around 8:45 that same morning. Fire officials say Manuel was found lying in a snow bank suffering from severe hypothermia. Manuel was transported to Christ Hospital where his condition is unknown.
Police officials have not released why Manuel had left the scene or what caused the accident. According to the Illinois Department of Corrections, Manuel is currently on parole. Manuel was sentenced to 17 years in prison for Home Invasion out of Will County in 2013 and was released in February of 2020.
