The 41st President of the United States, George H.W. Bush, will lie in state in Washington D.C. through Wednesday, following his death Friday night at the age of 94.

For a local man and veteran, Bush's passing brings back memories of a time when he had a coincidental meeting with POTUS and former First Lady Barbara Bush.

Tom Richard of North Aurora was on his honeymoon in 2010 when he and his wife pulled into a hotel in coastal Kennebunkport, Maine.

Richard, a 28-year military veteran, who was a Major in the Air Force Security Forces and had just returned from Iraq, says President Bush thanked him for his service and congratulated the couple.

Richard says the couple went in to explore the hotel, thinking the encounter was over.

The couple drove to the Bush Compound in Walker's Point where they toured the grounds, took some pictures and thought a quick swim would be the end of the visit.

Conversation with the First Lady? -- Patricia Nixon's wedding and a "controversial" self-invite to a state dinner with French President Francois Mitterrand's wife.

The afternoon eventually led to pool side company with the President.

Richard says hearing the stories of Bush's life this week following the news brought back the memory.
