The minimum salary for teachers would increase under a bill headed to the governor’s desk.

The bill gradually raises base pay over the next four years until it hits $40,000 for the 2023-2024 school year.

Supporters say this will help attract and retain good teachers in Illinois but State Senator Jason Barickman of Bloomington wonders how districts will afford it.

It’s up to the governor now to sign the bill into law.
