A local congressman is warning the international community not to normalize relations with an administration that used chemical weapons on its own people.
Congressmen Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) and Brendan Boyle (D-PA) released a joint statement warning that the United States and its allies should not attempt to normalize relations with the Bashar al-Assad regime in Syria. This comes after reports that Lebanon made a deal to buy natural gas from Egypt with help from Syria.
Kinzinger said the Assad regime is backed by Russia and Iran and that the government has been directly responsible for the murder of over 600,000 of its own citizens. The statement warns that if members of the international community move to recognize the current Syrian government, the United States will use its diplomatic strength to counter these steps.
Kinzinger serves on the House Foreign Relations Committee and Co-chairs the Friends of a Free, Stable and Democratic Syria caucus.
