Governor JB Pritzker signed a law on Thursday that raises the minimum salary for teachers in the state to $40,000 by 2023.
The previous minimum salary of $9,000 to $11,000 was set decades ago. Gov. Pritzker argued that salary range discouraged college students from entering the profession.
Legislators on both sides of the aisle have both said the state is dealing with a teacher shortage.
Rep. Katie Stuart of downstate Edwardsville sponsored the measure. She says it will help convince more people to enter the profession and ease the teacher shortage.
The new law phases in the increase over four years, starting at $32,000 in the 2020-2021 school year reaching $40,000 by 2023.
