An Essex man was appointed to the Illinois 40th District State Senator seat on Friday.

Kankakee County farmer Patrick Joyce replaces former State Sen. Toi Hutchinson who has stepped down to take on her new role as Illinois’ Cannabis Regulation Oversight Officer.

In a press release, Joyce said he is honored to accept the appointment and wanted to thank Toi Hutchinson for her nine years of strong leadership. Joyce said he plans to work closely with each of these communities to find out what issues taxpayers feel most strongly about. The 40th District covers a portion of southern of Grundy County as well as parts of Cook, Kankakee and Will counties.
