At 10:20 this morning, many Illinois residents received an emergency alert for a Severe Threat Alert on their cellphones. This wasn’t for a thunderstorm or tornado, but a call for more licensed healthcare workers to join the fight against COVID-19.

The alert advises residents to sign up to volunteer at IllinoisHellps.net. Besides a need for healthcare workers, the state is asking for volunteers to donate blood, deliver meals, and provide non face-to face contact with older residents who are at risk of becoming socially isolated. Other opportunities include working at food pantries, legal assistance for low-income Illinoisans and donating money to the Illinois COVID-19 Response Fund.

Illinois officials are also asking the public to check in on your family and neighbors through call or text.
