An Illinois State Police K9 received a multi-threat ballistic vest, a K9 medical kit and a Narcan kit. The gift of protection was made possible by a donation to Protecting K9 Heroes and sponsored by Optimal Case Management in Plainfield.
K9 Bane is a 1.5-year-old German Shepherd born in Hungary and knows Dutch. He is a dual purpose K9 and is assigned to Officer Arvidson. According to District 5, they are losing K9s to the drug epidemic during searches and their goal is to have handlers properly equipped in case of an emergency.
Handlers are instructed to receive training from their local veterinarians on the proper use of the products provided. The multi-threat ballistic vest was provided by Armor Express and weigh approximately 4-5 pounds based upon the ballistics level chosen by the handler.
Each vest is custom sized specifically for each K9, has a warranty of five years and every vest comes with a personal sentiment patch chosen by their sponsor. Protecting K9 Heroes is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with the goal of protecting K9s through donations and support from various communities.
Their mission is to reduce the amount of K9 related deaths throughout the United States by supplying as many of them with the protection they need.
