Friends of a young Coal City family struggling with a medical emergency are hosting a benefit this Saturday, August 8th from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m at the Braidwood City Park.

The "Dollars for Dogs" fundraiser will benefit Khrista Boyd and her family. Boyd recently gave birth to her second child and suffered a massive stroke and brain bleed nine days later. The fundraiser is seeking to raise $15,000 to help cover medical expenses.

Cousin and co-worker Miranda Rickmon describes Boyd as a positive person who cherishes nothing more than being a wife and mother of three.

"She's the light of our store. Everyone who comes in knows who she is and love[s] cracking jokes with her... She never fails to put a smile on your face and she brightens every room she walks in," Rickmon said.

Friend Lauren Tidball also said Boyd lights up every room she enters. She's also the only person she knows who can travel all the way to Walt Disney World and still find someone she knows.

Those attending the outdoors event will be encouraged but not required to wear a mask and should follow social distancing guidelines. However, masks will be required in the pavilion. Hot dogs, drinks, T-shirts and bracelets will be sold as well as raffle tickets for many baskets and prizes. Tickets are $1 each, six for $5 and 13 for $10. All donations will go directly to the Boyd family.
