A former Morris City Council member was arrested by the Morris Police Department in the 500 block of East Benton Street on June 6th. Donald Matteson, 80, of Morris was arrested for two counts of aggravated assault, obstructing a police officer and fleeing a police officer.
The Morris Police Department responded to a business in the 1500 block of Creek Drive where Matteson was allegedly waving a handgun in the air and making threats. Police officials say Matteson allegedly refused to stop for an officer while in his vehicle after leaving the scene.
Matteson had to be physically disarmed and taken into custody outside of his home, a short time later. A loaded 9mm handgun was recovered from Matteson’s front right pants pocket. Investigators say Matteson had a proper FOID card and concealed carry license. He was transported to the Morris Police Department and released after posting bond.
Matteson, who lost in the 2017 Election to Third Ward Alderman Derek Wren, spent several years on the Morris City Council.
