A former Marseilles City Council member spoke about the hiring of a new marketing specialist at the city council meeting this week.
In July, the council approved hiring Michelle Turner, who will keep the city’s website and social media pages updated with the latest news and events. Marseilles Mayor Jim Hollenbeck said Turner will work 160 hours a month with annual salary of $43,000.
Former Finance Commissioner Robert Davis said hiring someone for this position could have been done cheaper. He claims the city hired Turner without the normal process, there was no background check and no negotiations. Davis said the council has 30 days to reconsider the hiring and that’s what he wants them to do.
Marseilles Mayor Jim Hollenbeck said the council is trying to follow the comprehensive plan of the city.
Davis claims Turner approached the city and marketed herself instead of answering the city’s request for such an employee. The council last night did not ask for reconsideration of the issue.
