Barbara Joan Groesch, age 83 of Fort Atkinson, WI formally of Yorkville, IL passed away January 25, 2018 at UW Hospital in Madison, WI. Born December 29, 1934 in Aurora, IL to Albert and Betty Fredricksen, she attended Aurora East High School and graduated in 1952. Barbara was married on November 6, 1954 to Richard D. Groesch and they enjoyed the next 63 years together.
Barb completed a Floral Design Certificate and embarked on a gratifying career as a florist in the Aurora area. Her specialty was weddings and she went on to open her own business, The Bride’s Flower Shop in Yorkville. Barb retired from the florist industry and served as the Executive Director of the Yorkville Chamber of Commerce for several years enjoying the camaraderie and challenge of sustaining local businesses.
Barbara was instrumental in the establishment of the Yorkville chapter of the American Business Women’s Association (ABWA) and was a council member of the University of Illinois Cooperative Extension Service representing Kendall County. She was also active in the Illinois Homemakers Extension Federation. Barb was also involved in bringing the Indian Valley Vocational Center to local schools. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Yorkville and active on several committees.
Barb retired to Fort Atkinson, WI with her husband and became involved with the Town of Sumner where she was elected the Township Clerk and held that position for 19 years.
Barb will be especially remembered for her love, humor, and community spirit that she imprinted on her family and will be deeply missed until we meet again.
She is survived by her husband Richard D. Groesch; children, Rick (Terry) Groesch II, Laurie (Tony) Houle, both of Yorkville and Barry (Carla) Groesch of Punta Gorda, FL; grandchildren, Nikki Pagano (Amy Malouf), Chris (Jamie) Groesch, T.J. (Jamie) Houle, Alex (Allie) Houle, and Nick (Dottie) Groesch and 10 great grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Del Light of Oswego, IL. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Betty Fredricksen.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 – 7:00 pm on Wednesday, January 31, 2018 at Larson-Nelson Funeral Home, 1617 North Bridge Street, Yorkville, IL 60560. Burial will take place at St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Yorkville, IL on Thursday, February 1 following a service at 10:00 am at Larson-Nelson Funeral Home.
